Council Tax freeze a "pre-election gimmick”.

This was the damning response from Lib Dem Councillor, Adam Carew, to East Hampshire District Council Tories' decision to freeze Council Tax for the next 3 years. East Hants Lib Dems Vice-Chairman, Robert Saunders added "we need the unfair Council Tax to be scrapped not frozen". More....

Congratulations to Ruth and Diccon Bright on the safe arrival of a son, Isaac,  weighing in  at 9lbs 12oz. Ruth was thRuth, Diccon & Isaace Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate at the last general election.  Ruth has been  working hard  for the area, right up until her confinement, and she expects to return to the political fray as soon as possible.

Where has all the money gone?’

Gordon Brown has delivered his tenth budget as Chancellor of the Exchequer. But with more and more people feeling let down by New Labour, the Liberal Democrats are asking where all the money has gone over the years Labour has been in power.  More

The Green Tax switch

Liberal Democrat leader Menzies Campbell MP has unveiled plans to protect and improve our environment with a major "green tax switch".

The party wants to cut income tax for everyone, and take millions of the least well off out of income tax altogether, whilst instead taxing pollution more heavily.

"We are the only major party which takes the environment seriously and that does mean that environmental taxes will rise, but we will also cut income tax by 2p in the pound and take around three million people out of income tax completely. This will be good news not just for our environment but for everyone who will benefit from income tax cuts," said Ming Campbell.

NHS Dentistry is in crisis,

Latest figures show that less than half the population is registered with an NHS dentist.  Many people report not being able to find a dentist near where they live.  Others find that their dentist has decided to go private and they are removed from the register.

Some people have to travel miles to find a dentist.  This is particularly hard for people in rural areas who do not have a car.  More

Hidden Tory Tax - Are you paying it?

EHDC Tories promised to control council spending and keep the annual increase in Council Tax to 2.5%. Did they do it? They say, yes - but Cllr Peter Rodgers’ investigations reveal that they have actually increased the tax burden on a significant section of the public. Since taking control of the council in 1999, the Tories have hiked Parking Charges well over the inflation rate. They are using a profit of around half a million a year to hide the fact that they have actually increased spending by some 7% over their 2.5% Tax.

More to Come

The Tories also promise annual Parking Season Ticket increases, completely unjustified, hitting those who unavoidably have to park and work in Petersfield and Alton, because they can’t rely on public transport.

Clanfield School Traffic Chaos

LibDem County Councillor Sam Payne and District Councillor Peter Rodgers are backing the  campaign for something to be done to reduce the traffic problems near Clanfield Junior School. There are two main problems here, one with school traffic which blocks up East Meon Road, causing some road users to dangerously overtake but, more importantly there is an issue of the safety of both school children and senior citizens. At present the  junction is too wide between Chalton Lane, South Lane and East Meon Road causing cars to speed around corners. This needs to be narrowed and the whole crossing area improved. We hope that this work can be pushed through as part of the school travel plan, but delays due to staff shortages at Hampshire County Council are putting our children and elderly at risk.

Councillor presses for improvements to crime magnet alleyway

Alton Councillor Robert Saunders continues to press for the district council to clean up a problem alleyway and adjoining derelict land between Anstey Lane and Dove Court. The alleyway and old dairy site has been a magnet for crime, anti-social behaviour, overgrown hedges and rubbish dumping which has caused problems for those who use the alley and local residents. Cllr Saunders said “closure of this important thoroughfare is not an option but the residents of the area  have a right to safety”.

As Liberal Democrats we believe in the National Health Service and we want to see it prosper. But this also means pointing out where Labour's reforms are harming the NHS. To help improve the NHS we need to hear from patients who have difficulty accessing treatment and from professionals prevented from providing the services the community needs.
